Sometimes healing my aura requires me to venture far enough to meet myself again...
Firstly, I’d like to thank a good friend for convincing me to go on this trip, because it was the retreat that I needed at that time! If you ever want to feel closer to God, just go into nature.
Medellín, Colombia is comprised of vibrant culture and beautiful landscape everywhere. With its array of restaurants, museums, and parks, there's plenty to do and see here. Whether you're looking for a relaxing getaway or a way to explore the city, you'll find what you're looking for in Medellín.
We literally started the trip off paragliding over the city. I fell, I scraped my knee, I was nauseous, but it was well worth it! The experience of soaring off a mountain into thermal currents, with breathtaking deep green views beneath you is electrifying! You only live once and if you do it right the first time, once is enough.
You’ll get the most out of your trip if you choose the free walking tour. The guides will provide an insightful experience while navigating through the highlighted areas such as Comuna 13 and Pablo Escobar’s properties. Get an authentic look at Medellín food culture by visiting one of the city’s markets filled with local vendors selling everything from fresh produce, baked goods, ready-made arepas, corn, and pizza. Do some fruit tasting on your tour or just buy some. You can not resist; prices are cheap and the food/fruits are delicious! There are plenty of little restaurants and markets throughout the city where you can grab a light or full breakfast/lunch depending on how you’re traveling.
Incorporating a tranquil, self-care day in your travel plans is essential. Treat yourself to the luxury you deserve. Kúa Spa located at Movich Hotel is hands down the best experience I’ve ever had! The U.S. needs to step their game up! This amazing sanctuary offers a personal Zen paradise. You will enjoy a range of massages, facials, hydrotherapy, and serene surroundings. The peaceful crystal cleansing prior to the massage intriguingly set the tone. The therapists pampered the mind and body in a botanical setting. They use the highest-grade essential oils and organic products to ensure only the best quality. It’s no limits to relaxation in this comfortable oasis.
Many outings are in close proximity, but if you'd like to adventure outside of the city, Guatapé is a casual day trip from Medellín. The charming town square of El Peñol is surrounded with traditional street foods, art, sculptures, and monuments. Just like most of Columbia, the vicinity is embellished with bright hues that will make your eyes pop!
A day pass to Bosko will help you unwind after the long drive. The hotel offers a luxurious glamping experience in a picturesque lush and soothing haven. This was my first day after a 40 day fast, so of course I had to indulge in the Columbian Coffee and it was worth every sip! From the remarkable sky pools with stunning views, to their decadent dining menu, Bosko has all the amenities needed for a pampering stay. Chef's Kiss!
Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted by partaking in a Colombian coffee exfoliation. After washing our hands with water, we were given a small amount of ground coffee to massage into our hands, then rinse again with water.
The most popular activity in Guatapé is hiking the giant El Peñon rock that takes 740 steps in total. According to geologists, the rock is approximately 65 million years old. The former inhabitants of this region, worshiped the rock and called it in their language "mujará" (meaning 'rock' or 'stone'). After climbing the steps, you’ll reach the top of the rock. Here, you’re rewarded with wondrous views over the valley and lake of Guatape. Climbing up the steps wasn't so bad. However, the terrifying part is walking 740 steps back down. My only advice is "Don't look down!" My anxiety was through the roof once I reached step 200 and looked back at the view. It was nice but scary.
While touring the town, enjoy the Tuk-Tuk transportation either to the Piedra del Peñol or Guatapé and feel the vibrance of the Umbrella Street. Don’t forget to take pictures! Every site is beautifully painted and decorated like a personal coloring book.
El Poblado is where you may end up every night in Medellín to party & vibe like the locals. The streets are encircled by bars, restaurants, and clubs. It was a nostalgic feeling of home as I saw the Calle 8 street sign. If you're looking for some fine dining, you'll find plenty of options here. Dinner at El Botanico and Panka was superb. Just order an entire feast and it's still half the price of what you'll pay in the U.S. with more potions too. Medellín is a hub of vibrant culture, with an incredible food and coffee scene, great museums and galleries, public sculptures and street art, bustling fruit markets, colorful neighborhoods, and lots of urban green spaces.
Medellín; City of Eternal Spring is indisputably a must-visit place in Colombia. This place has an old soul and a young, energetic, creative spirit. To experience more of Columbia in its essence, Cartagena is now added to my bucket list. I can't wait!
